Repetitive Strain Injury
How to ensure you don't suffer from RSI
I have had some queries regarding RSI (repetitive strain injury) from using punchneedles. I use my punchneedles almost every day and sometimes for hours at a time. In early days I had twinges of pain in my wrist, elbow, shoulder and neck. I have made a conscious decision to only ever work with my punchneedles whilst sitting correctly at a table where I have adequate support. I rest my hoop on the table and I sit forward far enough so that the whole of my right forearm is resting on the table as I am embroidering. I have to discipline myself to get up and move as I know it is easy for me to go off into punchneedle heaven and stay in the same position for long periods. When I do get up, I clasp my hands behind my back and gently lift my arms as high as I can to stretch out all of the tense muscles.
Also, take your hands in front of the chest as though in prayer position and and hold the heels of the hands together with elbows at right angles and push the palms together firmly. relaxing and tensing a number of times.
Please be aware of your posture when dancing with your needles or sadly the dance might come to a painful end.
